How Stedair® Prevent is tested

The Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE)

This test is performed on filtration materials and devices that are designed to provide protection against biological aerosols, such as face masks, surgical gowns, caps, and air filters.

The test measures the percentage of bacteria larger than 3 microns filtered out by a mask.

Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE)

This test measures the percentage of particles larger than 1 micron filtered out by the mask.  It evaluates the nonviable particle retention or filtration efficiency of filter media and other filtration devices at sub-micron levels. This test is performed on face masks and all filter material that allows 1 cubic foot per minute (CFM) flow to pass through it.

Breathability

Test performed to determine the breathability of masks by measuring the differential air pressure on either side of the test article.

Synthetic Blood Resistance

This test is performed on filtration materials that are designed to provide protection against biological aerosols, such as face masks, surgical gowns, caps, and air filters.

The test evaluates the resistance of a mask to penetration by a small volume (~2 mL) of synthetic blood at a high velocity (80 mmHg, 120 mmHg, or 160 mmHg). The mask either passes or fails based on visual evidence of synthetic blood penetration.

Flammability

The test evaluates the flammability of medical textiles including face masks, surgical gowns, and drapes.
